Fortified synagogues in Ukraine

Let's continue an interesting topic about defensive temples or places of worship in Ukraine with elements of fortifications.

The constant threat of enemy raids, uprisings of local peasants, or Cossack uprisings caused the emergence of the so-called "fortification" style in the architecture of religious buildings. For example, the walls of temples were built thicker with strong stones, and they were also made with archers and loopholes. Jewish temples also were built in this style. Such synagogues have become important, or even one of the main elements of city fortifications and fortresses in Podolia and Galicia.

Husyatyn synagogue is a vivid example of the integration of synagogue into the city defense system. This fortified synagogue was the main element of the defense in the northern part of the city. Olga Plamenetskaya has written in her work “The Defensive Temples of Podolia” about the synagogue in Gusyatyn: “in fact, the stone structure of the synagogue (with the respective garrison and artillery) provided the defense of the eastern border of the city and, near the castle on the western edge of the old former Gusyatyn and several Christian churches (including the fortified Saint Onuphrius сhurch), was one of the knots of city's defense.

Yukhim Sitsinsky has even compared the defensive synagogue in Sataniv with a small castle. In his work "Defensive castles of Western Podolia XIV-XVII centuries" he noted the following: “The synagogue looks like a small castle. It has high walls and a strong vault at the top; the roof of that vault is hidden behind high parapets (from above) with small archers. There are large windows with gabled tops in the walls below the parapets. There is an extension for the women's department on one side of the house. The main building of the synagogue is 18 meters long and 16 meters wide.”

Unfortunately, today only a dozen defensive synagogues in Ukraine have survived. And almost all of them are in a terrible state, and some are in a state of complete destruction.

For your attention, I offer a collection of eleven surviving defensive synagogues in Ukraine

1. Synagogue in Brody, Lviv region. 1742 year
